Since 1999, Ageing Well has worked to increase the quality of life of vulnerable older people in Lewisham, especially those who are isolated due to physical or cognitive challenges.
“We work to reduce social isolation among the older population of Lewisham and to increase the mental and physical well-being of our service users through activities that encourage social interaction, mobility and creativity. We also aim to help seniors access other services and signpost and cross-refer them to other organisations.”
How you have refocused your work/services during Covid-19?
“As our groups cannot meet for the foreseeable future, we have been keeping in touch with our members over the phone and email. We have been signposting and making sure they have what they need. Our singing group has a very active WhatsApp group going with exercises, videos and banter. Other members are not online. We also are thinking a lot about our structure, our finances, about how we can be best situated to help our members and be a familiar social outlet for them when it is finally safe to do so.”
Do you have any good news stories to share?
“Many of our members report that they are catching up on hobbies such as oil painting or gardening. The neighbours of various of our members have been heart-warmingly supportive of them– which is great to hear.”
