About your organisation/community group?

We run clubs teaching people how to use tablets, mobiles and laptops in community centres in Lewisham. These are called Techy Tea clubs. We also build websites and give IT support to community centres and other community organisations, charities and micro-businesses in Lewisham.

How you have refocused your work/services during Covid-19?

Now we are in lockdown the techy tea clubs have finished. Instead we are helping people over the telephone. We call this project Virtual Aid. We are also helping people move their clubs (such as children’s dance clubs and fitness classes) online using Zoom. We call this project “The show must go online”. We have also started making videos giving advice on popular tools such as Zoom. We are still building websites and helping community centres with their IT. Many of the community centres have re-purposed to being food distribution hubs. So the still need our support.

Do you have any good news stories to share?

We have helped 2 businesses get online and given consultancy to a wide variety of organisations, including the NHS, churches, Voluntary and community sector organisations and many members of the public who are isolating at the moment. In one instance we have managed to get a laptop donated by Lewisham Local installed with Team Viewer and customised so it is usable by someone who is isolated due to a range of disabilties. We are giving ongoing support to this individual so that they can communicate with the outside world and also watch films on Youtube and play games. We have also been involved in the development of an online directory which helps people find out what is going on that can help them during the crisis. This project was managed by Tim Bradley OBE, founder of the Lewisham Wellbeing Map.

Do you have any volunteering roles that we can advertise for you

We are looking for volunteers for Virtual Aid. A DBS check would be helpful with this, as sometimes the clients are vulnerable.
