Good preparation was the top ‘takeaway’ from the session How to Save Money on Your Charity Audit on 22nd May 2019. This niche subject attracted 15 local charity staff and trustees, and Louise Alexander from Forest Hill based business, Accounting For Charities shared methods and stories from her 25 years in the charity sector.
Louise guided participants through a method of preparation for audit, giving advice on how to avoid pitfalls, such as the late preparation of the Trustees Annual Report. She stressed the importance of reading up on Serious Incident Reporting in charities, and why accounts might be qualified. Her audit schedules and checklists can be accessed below.
Louise recommended ACIE (Association of Charity Independent Examiners) and the Charity Practitioners Forum for finding Independent Examiners, and laid out the guidelines for Independent Examination, as opposed to Full Audit or Receipts & Payments.
Louise works freelance for small charities, moving organisations onto cloud accounting, devising management accounts for multiple restricted funds and training junior staff in bookkeeping.
