MyHome is a residential sales and lettings agents based in Hither Green since 1999. They have been striving to improve the lives of homeless people, donating 50 sleeping bags to Deptford’s 999 Club in December 2017.
The decision came when they were struck by the alarming reality of homelessness figures ever increasing in the area. Michaela Anaka explains, “we wanted to ensure that help got to those on the streets. Reaching out to them and reporting to StreetLink who just might be able to help.”
They went out onto the streets in December to help those sleeping rough outside the library get the support they needed from StreetLink. Using donations of over £1000 from a Facebook group of friends and landlords, MyHome were able to put the balance towards funding all the vital supplies and sleeping bags that month.
Michaela further reveals how the estate agents were moved to act, “homelessness in Lewisham is at record levels and those tenants on low incomes are finding it difficult to afford the high rents in the area.”
MyHome is continuing to look at projects to help homeless people locally. They’re setting into motion a regular annual donation of sleeping bags and supplies to 999 Club and possibly going onto the streets to try and get vulnerable people the help they need.
With homelessness increasing rather than diminishing, Michaela expresses how “the government needs to do more to provide realistically priced housing for low-income tenants.” This is as much a responsibility at a national level as it is local and as MyHome demonstrates everyone can do something to create change. One idea through Streetlink is inspiring local residents to help as much as they possibly can to improve the lives for those most vulnerable in the community.
