Schools across Lewisham have signed up to the National School Breakfast Programme (NSBP) and we are delighted to be supporting 24 local schools in delivering a free and healthy breakfast every morning to pupils who were previously too hungry to learn.
A healthy breakfast can provide children with the energy and nutrients they need to thrive: improving their educational outcomes by increasing alertness and improving their memory and concentration. Magic Breakfast research, conducted by the Education Endowment Foundation, found that Y2 pupils in schools providing a free, nutritious breakfast boosted their reading, writing and maths by an average of 2 months’ progress per year, compared to pupils in schools with no such breakfast provision. We have been so pleased and excited to see how enthusiastic schools have been as they launch their NSBP breakfast provision and start to feel the positive impact that having classrooms of children with full stomachs and focused minds is bringing.
All NSBP schools can now offer a free healthy school breakfast, available to all, and enjoy the benefits that it brings. Our Magic Bagels are a hit with schools like Elfrida Primary School who are preparing and serving bagels to 160 children in the playground every morning. Other schools say that children who have been disruptive are now settled in the morning and more focused in their lessons and one Head teacher said that attendance has improved and that the school overall, is a much calmer place.
We are delighted that the NSBP has reached the recruitment target of 1,775 schools set by the Department for Education. This means that by the beginning of the Summer Term, over 250,000 more schoolchildren will be starting lessons with a healthy breakfast inside them, settled and ready to learn.
Currently we have filled all of our funded places but are doing everything possible to work with the DfE to extend the programme after March 2020.
