At Christmas time VSL provides hampers to elderly, isolated adults, and children in the community. The hampers include boxes of food, Supermarket vouchers for families, as well as books and toys for children. Those in need are often referred to VSL by many different organisations, including, social workers, housing officers in social services, and other charities. The hamper projects also support local hostels, the Lewisham Refuge, and other Refugee Assistance Charities. The hamper project has been running for more than 30 years with the aim to help vulnerable and isolated individuals and families on low incomes. These individuals are often trying to make ends meet, at what can be a very difficult and isolating time of year.
The VSL team wish to make everyone feel that they are important. They receive donations from schools, churches, and many individual donations too. The team also goes out fundraising and often tops up the donations themselves. The King’s Church provides big red food boxes and VSL pack hampers for individuals and couples. In addition, school classes often visit VSL to provide donations to these vulnerable people. On Wednesday 4th December, The Drumbeat School in Lewisham, provided some donations and volunteers for VSL. These volunteers are made up of local people who are trying to make a change in their community.
