Grove Park Youth Club Building Preservation Trust is delighted to announce the reopening of the Grove Park Youth Club on Monday 26 July.
The Trust was formed in 2016 to galvanise local support to save the Grove Park youth club building in Lewisham that was closed in 2013. Eight years on, and the Trust has not only saved the building from the threat of demolition, but it has also given thousands of voluntary hours and delivered back to the community a refurbished and revitalised youth club that will become a hive of activity.
The redevelopment was delayed due to Covid-19, and against the backdrop of nationwide youth club closures, which saw the closure of 800 youth clubs, was deemed an impossible task by many. However, the small team led by resident and parent, Rob Clayton, persevered, and the reopening, represents a remarkable feat of communities determination, courage and dedication.
To support the redevelopment, in May 2021 the Grove Park Youth Club project secured funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, funding which has provided much- needed capital investment, and an employment boost to the previously voluntary led project.
The National Lottery funding, follows a host of funding provided by the Architectural Heritage Fund, Willmott Dixon Foundation, and L&Q Foundation to help restore the much-valued Youth Club.
The Trust is now working with the Rio Ferdinand Foundation to deliver an exciting summer schedule of activities, the first youth provision the community has been able to enjoy from this facility since 2013.
Rob Clayton said:
“We are thrilled to have realised our ambition and retained a great local asset for the community. We are also proud to be partnering with the Rio Ferdinand Foundation to reinstate youth services, and deliver new opportunities for our communities young people, to enjoy today and for many years to come.”
Rio Ferdinand Foundation, CEO Gary Stannett said: “The Grove Park Youth Club Building Preservation Trust has dedicated thousands of voluntary hours over many years, faced challenges and setback. The reopening of the Youth Club today is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved, and we are excited to be working with the team to return a programme of youth activity, starting this summer.”
