Rock iOrganisation Community Project: a non- profit organisation providing services for vulnerable people who have become homeless as well as those suffering with mental health and wellbeing

I am Dr Leroy Johnson the founder of Rock-IOrganisation Community Project. The organisation was opened in April 2019 as a pilot scheme for the homeless, rough sleepers, disadvantaged and most vulnerable. The idea was to shape the project into a soup kitchen type service where hot delicious culturally nutritional soup and meal would be services as a donation was given, the project was self-funded and donations was given at times by community individuals.

I am a qualified, experienced and effective social care manager worked within Manchester Social services and Greater London with over thirty five active years . I have Confident in delivering, planning co-ordinating and implementation of a range of project and services, including Project development, Project Management and management of resources. I am motivated, honest trustworthy, reliable and hardworking and have a current DBS.
Rock-IOrganisation’s aim is to provide a safe and secure space for adults aged between 18 to 80 years who are disenfranchised and experiencing difficulties in coping with living to engage in activities to build their self-esteem to confront their struggles in life. Our mission is to support the mental health and wellbeing of vulnerable people who are at risk of sleeping rough or displaced from their homes. Our beneficiaries are predominantly from the BAME community and we have been established for 2 years replacing the provision that the family Health ISIS who was operating for over 20 years were disbanded in 2019.

Prior to the pandemic Rock-IOrganisation was operating out of the Hope Centre at Forest Hill three days per week providing:

• Hot meals & beverages
• Advice surgery
• ICT classes
• Dominoes /Board games
• Sewing classes

During the pandemic Rock-IOrganisation have been delivering food parcels and hot meals to our beneficiaries with our volunteers undertaking weekly check-in calls to see how our beneficiaries are doing. We currently have 69 indirect people using our services regularly with 28 active Rock- IOrganisation members.

Rock I Organisation reach out to the local community struggling with mental health issues and provide one-on-one support in a welcoming safe space. In response to the pandemic they now provide service users with meals and connections in this period. Many of the service users are unemployed, homeless, and rough sleepers, and also deal with mental health needs and learning disabilities, dealing with loneliness and being marginalised by their local community. The project will meet their needs by providing them with a hot meal and drink, recreational and social activities such as Dominoes, Arts and Crafts, sewing plus a chance to build relationships through the organisation, and to be upskilled with IT skills to make them more employable.

Our beneficiaries have expressed to me that they no longer feel isolated and have made friends through the activities that our organisation provide. Our homeless clients have expressed how they love the hot meals we serve, check-ins and advice to set them on the right path to secure living accommodation.

We have recently obtained an award from the Mayor of London for the valuable contribution within the borough’s community response to COVID 19.

Our current partners are:

• Lewisham Council
• London City Mission
• Catbytes – helps people with their skills in using the internet
• Food bank
• The Jenner Practice- prospective intention to receive referrals

We are still forging new partners and networks with other community voluntary groups, privates and public and government funders and sponsorship.

We are a member of the Lewisham Local which has encouraged the overall engagement and support of the grassroot voluntary groups within the local community.

We have supported the Black Lives Matters and rally for the justice of George Floyd including the injustice and inequality and systemic racism.

As the Covid 19 pandemic is moving towards relaxing the restrictions of social distancing and social bubbles Rock-Iorganisation are looking for an alternative property

At present Rock-IOrganisation services have been operating out of my home and these premises will enable our organisation to have base for us to enhance the services we currently provide to our beneficiaries; we would be able to:

• Have dedicated office space.
• Train our volunteers.
• Utilise the kitchen for cooking and serving hot meals.
• Mini cafe
• Shower facility provision for those homeless/rough sleepers
• Cookery classes
• Fitness classes
• Health & wellbeing
• ICT beginners to support them with digital inclusion
• Employment training
• CAP Budgeting /debt management courses
• Storage area for toiletries and clothing
• Space to be used for community activities and events.

Rock-IOrganisation have been successful in securing grant funding to the sum of £18,000 for the delivery of our programmes; we are hoping that we will be able to secure a building which will allow us to have a peppercorn rent for the first couple of years, this will enable us to fully establish ourselves in the premises undertaking any refurbishment works. We are optimistic that we can raise additional funds for the rental of the premises.

We are therefore seeking donation of funds through gift aid, sponsorship or general fund-giving.
